Abstract

Duchenne muscular dystrophy (DMD) is considered an inherited, recessive, X-linked (Xp21) myopathy affecting the DMD gene encoding the dystrophin protein that is necessary for muscle fiber stability. It predominantly affects males. Definitive diagnosis is confirmed by genetic testing. The aim of this article is to present six clinical cases of boys who started with progressive muscle weakness and who were diagnosed with Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy. It is a descriptive observational case series study, based on an exhaustive anamnesis, physical examination and use of complementary studies. The presentation of these cases are the first steps to create interest in research on this pathology, and to encourage early detection in the Guatemalan population.
