Abstract

Valentín Patzán Pérez (05/20/1933-08/22/2014) is a highly accomplished musician with a career in the field of traditional Guatemalan music and ethnomusicology. He learned to play marimba when he was twelve years old. He is recognized for accompanying the Kaqchikel Toritos Dance practiced in the village of Lo de Bran, Mixco, Guatemala, which is considered a heritage of the central region of Guatemala. "Don Tin" Patzán participated in the execution of the sones, of the dance in question, a task that he performed with great mastery. His marimba was diatonic scale keyboard, called "Reyna Tropical."

Author of numerous scientific texts on popular cultures, traditional dances and also of novels, stories and opinion articles in various national and foreign broadcasting bodies. Now retired.
