Testate amoebae, unicellular protist with protective coverings called tests, play an important role in aquatic ecosystems and are sensitive indicators of environmental changes. Despite their significance, their study in Neotropical regions has been insufficiently addressed. This study consisted of a bibliographic review of publications on testate amoebae in Central American lake ecosystems from 1950 to the present, utilizing various academic databases. All found articles were classified according to the type of publication, year of publication, authors' affiliations, and studied lakes, in addition to compiling a list of testate amoebae species identified in each country. Four scientific articles were found, with a total of 65 species of testate amoebae distributed across three countries (Guatemala, El Salvador, and Costa Rica). This limited amount of research contrasts with the identified species diversity, highlighting the need for further investigations in the region and the development of local research capabilities. It is recommended to strengthen research in Central America to delve into regional biodiversity and its ecological function, essential for the conservation of lake ecosystems.
