Abstract

Chlorination is the process of addition of chlorine or chlorine compounds to the water, to eliminate pathogen microorganisms. In wastewater, it has been studied the reaction of chlorine with different compounds in water, that results in the formation of toxic and cancerogenic subproducts. Also, there is research about how water characteristics affect the chlorination and its efficiency, in comparison with other technologies like ozone, ultraviolet radiation and filtration membranes. The environmental regulations of the countries have made it necessary to pay attention to the reduction of pathogenic elements in the wastewater that is discharged into rivers and lakes, with chlorination is still the most common disinfection process for effluents of wastewater treatment plants. In developed countries, it is usual to implement dichlorination technologies to avoid secondary effects of chlorine, but in Guatemala this is not commonly used, thus resulting in a problem that has not been addressed.
