This article reproduces the characterisation and efficiency of an intermittent filter, using as pumice sand filter media. The model is a secondary treatment which was designed, built and evaluated, the system is located in the Wastewater Treatment Plant "Ing. Arturo Pazos Sosa". The treatment unit is an alternative for communities with limited economic resources, reaching an average removal of organic matter, BOD5 of 19.92 mg/l, chemical oxygen demand, COD of 39.17 mg/l, total phosphorus of 8.38 mg/l, total nitrogen of 29.40 mg/l suspended solids and of 34.92 mg/l, complying with the parameters set forth in the Agreement No. 236-2006 in its stage two.
