Integrated water resources management plan for Great Corn Island, Nicaragua

This article shows a study carried out on the Great Corn Island; which contains information to reduce pollution of water resources through the
integrated management of water resources through adequate environmental sanitation. For this purpose, the characterization and diagnosis
of water resources of Great Corn Island, the determination of the public services related to water resources, was proposed solutions for the
sanitation with a comprehensive approach and develop strategic lines pointed to a plan in integrated management of the water resources. The
methodology used was based on the collection of existing information and field work; with which the water resources management plan was
elaborated. Among the main conclusions can be indicated that the levels of groundwater oscillate between 0.97 and 6.91 m, the island has
elevations ranging from 40 to it was 85 masl, the domestic wastewater generated is 505 m3
/ day untreated, so that it was recommended the
construction of biofilters for treatment, also estimated a volume of solid waste generation between 40 and 50 m3 compacted per day, which
are deposited in the open air without any treatment and classification, so it was recommended the construction of a landfill to deposit the
garbage and give it proper management, at the same time as the relocation of the landfill that is currently operating. The integrated water
resources management plan was also implemented, which focuses on creating prosperity for 100% of the island's inhabitants through
sustainable tourism, which is the main economic source in the area; and solutions are proposed to clean up the environment and protect
natural resources.
