José Mata Gavidia was born in El Salvador in 1916 and died in Guatemala in 1988. He was
a prominent Central American historian, philosopher, professor and artist. He was professor and dean of the Faculty of Humanities at the Universidad de San Carlos de Guatemala. He designed the Monumenta Landivariana project, prior to the return of Rafael Landívar's remains to Guatemala in 1950.
Mata Gavidia was one of the greatest scholars of Landívar's work. Under his direction was the
«Seminario de Estudios Landivarianos» based at the Universidad de San Carlos de Guatemala, an opportunity that allowed him to edit and produce special issues dedicated to Landívar, in the Revista Universidad de San Carlos.
