Unregulated urban expansion and its impact on "Chipi-Chipi" rainfall in Cobán, Guatemala
Keywords:
Chipi-Chipi, climate change, heavy rain, urban planningAbstract
Accelerated population growth, coupled with a lack of land use and urban planning, has led to the disorderly expansion of cities. The disastrous effects of climate change are also affecting the city of Cobán, in Alta Verapaz, Guatemala. Changes in precipitation and intense rainfall events have led to flooding, landslides and other environmental problems. Local planning instruments require strategic planning that considers climate change as a central point of their actions and investments. Reducing the vulnerability and risks of cities to hazards will contribute to the socioeconomic well-being and health of inhabitants and mitigate anthropogenic impacts on the environment.
