Socioeconomic Challenges Faced by Chronic Kidney Disease Patients in Escuintla, Guatemala
Keywords:

This study describes the social implications of people diagnosed with chronic kidney disease (CKD) cared for by the international organization Doctors Without Borders between 2021 and 2023, in La Gomera, Sipacate and La Democracia, municipalities in the department of Escuintla, where agribusiness is an important source of work for hundreds of people. The method used was qualitative, with a sampling that included the multidisciplinary team (medicine, psychology, social work and anthropology) working for Doctors Without Borders. The results showed that patients tend to abandon their treatment because they face social, labor, economic, food and accessibility implications. Among the social implications were labor and social exclusion, lack of specialized care, difficult access to medication, and difficulties in adapting to a new way of life.
